Where central water-borne sewerage systems are not available for the treatment of sewage, Hume septic tanks are suitable for use
  • in temporary structures such as site offices etc
  • in factories and residential/ office buildings in remote areas
Guidance for users
  • Reduction of polluting matter carried out in septic tanks vary from about 50% to 75%
  • The critical design factor of the septic tank is its liquid volume. Sizing of the tank should allow sewage (from the number of users and the expected waste flow per person per day) to be retained for at least a 24 hour period
  • It is recommended that septic tanks must be desludged at least once every two years to ensure proper functioning
  • Septic tanks must be sited away from wells and streams which are sources of portable water supply
