Applications

Bridge crossing over highways, railways or rivers for pedestrian, motorcycles and services.

Features

  • Functional deck integrated with main structural element to form strong and rigid box girder
  • Off steel form smooth finish
  • Long span capacity from 15m to 29m
  • Length customised to project requirement

Advantages
  • Fast, safe and neat construction
  • Minimum interruption to traffic
  • Eliminate messy insitu work
  • cost compared to conventional solutions
  • Lighter selfweight by 40%, compared to conventional solution
  • Very stable during handling and erection stages
  • Factory produced to stringent standards
  • High grade concrete and high durability
  • Robust section with high torsional rigidity
  • Optional aesthetic finishes can be incorporated onto the webs
  • Services can be concealed inside the box

Design Considerations
  •  Reinforced concrete design in accordance with BS 5400: Part 4: 1990
  • Concrete characteristic strength
    fci = 40MPa at transfer
    fcu = 50MPa at  28 days
  • Concrete cover to reinforcement  = 30mm
  • Loading:
    ~ Live loads = 5kN/m
    ~ Superimposed dead load = 2kN/m
  • Prestressed class I structure

Comparison with Conventional Solution

Conventional Solution Pre-tensioned Beams

Method
  1. Insitu foundation / supporting piers and accessories
  2. Install pre-stressed beams
  3. Install formworks and reinforcement for facial beam and deck
  4. Concreting, curing etc
  5. Dismantle formwork
  6. Finishing work railing, tiles etc
Problem
  1. Messy sitework special safety requirements needed owing to ongoing traffic below crossing
  2. Slow progress - weather dependent
  3. Uneconomical design - 2-stage composite & heavy
  4. Inconsistent quality of casts insitu works

Conventional Solution Post-tensioned Beams
Method
  1. Insitu foundation / supporting piers and accessories
  2. Install post-tensioned beams
  3. Finishing work - railing, tiles etc
Problem
  1. Sitework on casting and post-tensioning space, stressing etc
  2. Slow progress - weather dependent
  3. Uneconomical design heavy section, expensive cranage etc
  4. Requirement of site control
