DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
The main characteristic of the BEBO arch - the main component, is that their slenderness although adequate to support the loads, is flexible enough to allow elastic deformations to mobilize the passive resistance of the backfill. The analysis of the soil/arch structure is performed by computer simulation modeling the behavior of arch and backfill. The arches are analyzed for load conditions experienced throughout handling, transport, erection, backfilling and finally when in service.
- The loads considered are:
| - Self weight |
- Live loads** to BS5400: Part 2: 1978 |
| - Earth pressures from backfilling |
- Compaction equipment |
| in various stages |
- Differential foundation movements |
- Reinforced concrete design in accordance to BS5400: Part 4: 1984
- Characteristic strength of concrete at 28 days, fcu = 40 MPa
-
| Concrete cover to reinforcement: |
Earth-face = 50mm |
| |
Air-face = 40mm |
- Backfill materials: Selected materials to specification. Refer to technical manual on "Handling and Installation of BEBO System".
FOUNDATIONS
BEBO foundations are designed as for normal bridge foundations. Common types of foundation used for BEBO arches are strip footings, on slab foundations, and on pilecaps supported on reinforced concrete piles.
