Introduction
ARCH BRIDGES
Numerous bridges of all types have been built around the world over the years to meet the transportation needs of mankind. For over 2,000 years, the arch has been recognized as a safe, durable, economical and aesthetically pleasing structural form suitable for this purpose.
The Assyrians used the arch form as early as 800 B.C., in a large sewer and gateway. Roman engineers used the semi-circular stone arch which was so carefully crafted that its own weigh held it together without mortar. But such bridges had relatively narrow archways, an impediment to navigation. Half a world away, a Chinese builder solved that problem around 610 A.D. by flattening out this arch to build the Great Stone Bridge across Jiao River in northern China. Such flattened arches made longer bridge spans possible. Many of these arch bridges are still in service today.
