Hume Arch Culvert

Applications
  • Bridge crossing Over waterway, or vehicular / pedestrian underpass
  • Railway crossing over waterway, or vehicular / pedestrian underpass
  • Drainage / irrigation channels
  • Conduit for utility services(e.g. electrical cables / oil & gas pipelines)
  • Space creation over existing open drain as parking lots / open area
Design Considerations
  • Reinforced concrete design to BS5400 : Part 4 : 1990 or BS8110 : Part 1 : 1997
  • Soil-structure interaction is considered in the structural analysis model
  • Hume Arch Culverts (HAC) are available in three standard classes, with each catering for a particular range of fill heights including pavement. Design live load requirements for all three classes are in accordance with BS5400 : Part 2 : 1978 & BD 37/88

Standard Class Fill Height Above Crown (m)
    S2 0.5 (minimum) - 2.0 (maximum)
    S3 3.0 (maximum)
    S4 4.0 (maximum)

  • Design can also be customized to suit fill heights exceeding 4 meters including pavement; and / or design live load requirements beyond those specified in BD 37/38
  • Hydrostatic pressure is eliminated by the provision of a drainage system along the earth side of both foundation footings
  • Characteristic concrete strength at 28 days - Grade 40
  • Concrete cover to reinforcement      - Earth face - 50mm
                                                           - Air face - 40mm
  • Backfill material : sand or other suitable soil material subject to Engineer's approval
Features
  • Smooth arch profile projects an aesthetically pleasing structure
  • Monolithic structure with single or multiple span arch
  • Starter bars can be provided at end units for casting of in situ spandrel walls and wing walls
  • Units available in standard widths optimised for ease of transportation and installation
